Latin America Coffee Carbon Footprint Baseline Study

4C is implementing a project of a consortium led by Meo Carbon Solutions (MCS), as Technical Service Provider for the Latin America Coffee Carbon Footprint Baseline Study, initiated by Conservation International under the Sustainable Coffee Challenge.

Project Background

Project title: Latin America Coffee Carbon Footprint Baseline Study.

The project origin: Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico and Peru.

Project funded by: Center for Global Commons, University of Tokyo.

Project collaboration: This project represents strong collaboration between 4C and a key research partner at the University of Tokyo, strengthening the 4C Carbon Footprint methodology and working with local partners to map carbon emissions in the coffee supply chain.

Local Implementing partners: Simexco Daklak Ltd. Vietnam, Cocatrel, Sucden Colombia.

Technical Services Provider: 4C in close collaboration with MCS and GRAS.

Project period: The Project started on May 2024 and will end by December 2025 with full publication of project results and findings.

  • Increased capacities of supply chain actors to understand, document, and report on carbon emissions and sequestration in coffee systems, using both newly collected and existing data.
  • Improved sector-wide awareness of building data collection plans and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) techniques for carbon baselining and tracking as part of new and existing programming.
  • An improved framework and mechanism for regular data collection, sharing and analysis to facilitate impact monitoring and reporting, both by individual companies and at the aggregate sector and or country level.
  • Successful pre-competitive collaboration to accelerate climate action through the establishment of replication protocol to other origins and commodities, and insight into investment opportunities.

In the role of Technical Service Providers, the 4C team – in close collaboration with MCS and GRAS – will actively contribute to the delivery of the project. 4C will leverage the team of seasoned experts with dedicated experience in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting as well as hands-on experience in supply chain and system boundaries of coffee origins selected for this pre-competitive study. Additionally, the team will conduct a comparative analysis between the methodologies used in the Cool Farm Tool – used for the study – and 4C’s in-house Carbon Footprint Add-On.
