Improvement of Livelihoods of Colombian Smallholders
Improved sustainable agricultural management by Colombian coffee growers contributes to the long-term economic and ecological viability of smallholder farms, enhances the sector’s attractiveness for young adults, and supports market uptake in Europe.
Coffee production is one of the most important agricultural activities for the Colombia’s economy. The coffee sector is among the five key driving sectors for the country’s development, as identified by the Colombian Government.
Fostering Social Auditing
Enhancing Issue Detection and Risk Identification through Responsive and Context-Specific Approaches – ISEAL Innovations Fund
The global coffee supply chain faces significant challenges in addressing human rights issues such as child labour, discrimination, and harassment, which are often difficult to detect through traditional agricultural audits. Despite the robust framework provided by the 4C Code of Conduct, these complex social issues require more than standard auditing procedures to effectively identify and address their root causes. The intricate relationships within coffee production-particularly within 4C Units involving multiple stakeholders such as farmers, service providers, and workers-further contribute to this complexity.

Field Survey on Social Issues in the Philippines
To support coffee farmers in implementing the principles of the 4C Code of Conduct, Nestlé Philippines provides technical assistance related to good agricultural and management practices. However, farmers were found to be facing challenges in meeting certain social requirements, including the payment of minimum wages, ensuring health and safety at work, and supporting the education of workers’ children. Nestlé Philippines requested 4C’s guidance on implementing feasible and effective measures to address these issues and to enable progress within the framework of continuous improvement.
