Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges facing agriculture, driving temperature extremes, unpredictable rainfall and more frequent droughts and floods 

These impacts threaten crop productivity, farmer livelihoods, and global food security (Oxfam). Agriculture, forestry, and land use together account for around 20 % of global greenhouse gas emissions (FAO), making action in this sector critical. In coffee and cocoa supply chains, addressing carbon footprintssoil health, and water use and pollution is essential to building resilience and securing a sustainable future.

Who can apply for 4C Carbon Footprint Certification?

  • As an Add-On: Available to all currently active 4C Certified Units looking to enrich their core certification with verified carbon metrics
  • As a Standalone Solution: Open to any company, trader, or sector stakeholder outside the 4C system. You do not need to hold a core 4C Code of Conduct certification to utilise our robust, science-based carbon footprint verification and earn the standalone 4C Carbon Footprint certificate

This solution will be available to companies outside our system. However, it will only become accessible once the system document update has been published

4C Carbon Footprint Add-On

Our Carbon Footprint Add-On enables producers and companies to measure, monitor, and reduce GHG emissions across their supply chains. Using internationally recognised methodologies, it provides a clear picture of climate impacts and a roadmap for targeted action helping stakeholders meet corporate climate goals and comply with emerging reporting requirements.

In partnership with industry and development organisations, 4C has implemented targeted water usage and efficiency projects to reduce consumption, prevent pollution and improve water quality in farming communities. These initiatives not only lower environmental impact but also strengthen the long-term viability of agricultural production in water-stressed regions.
