Intermediary Buyers and Final Buyers of 4C coffee
From the perspective of sustainability, Intermediary Buyers (IBs) and Final Buyers (FBs) play an important role in promoting responsible sourcing and securing the future of the coffee sector via:
- Integrating sustainable coffee production into global markets
- Creating a positive impact on local farmers and their families
- Enabling deforestation-free, environmentally friendly, and fair coffee supply chains
Intermediary Buyers (IBs)
IBs include traders, exporters, importers, processors, or any other entities which trade or originate 4C certified coffee outside 4C Units (green coffee producing groups).
Any IB who claims sustainable sourcing through 4C certified coffee purchases must have accepted the Terms of Use for IBs. In order to accept the Terms of Use, IBs must register in the 4C portal. A prerequisite to handle coffee as 4C certified is the validation of the registration of the IB by 4C via the 4C portal.
IBs that would like to get 4C Chain of Custody certified can do so on a voluntary basis.

* Please note that IBs are only listed if the respective entity has agreed to the 4C Terms of Use (ToU) for IBs. The ToU requirement is effective from the 1st of July 2020 onwards and we are actively engaging our system users to make the corresponding adjustments in order to provide a complete picture on this page as soon as possible. Since the end of the transition period on the 1st of January 2021, it is not possible to trade any 4C certified coffee without signing the ToU for IBs.

Final Buyers
4C certified coffee is sold to Final Buyers (FBs), among them manufacturers, roasters, retailers, and brand owners, who seek sustainable coffee sourcing practices.
Any Managing Entity with a valid certificate, confirming compliance of its related 4C Unit, can sell coffee to Final Buyers. To source 4C coffee as a part of the sustainable purchasing strategy, Final Buyers sign a Service Agreement with 4C Services and pay a volume-based fee. The Service Agreement also enables them, among others, to use both the 4C logo on- and off-pack to visualize and support their sustainability claims. Traceability and comprehensive data collection
Intermediary and Final Buyers can access reliable data on 4C coffee and are informed of the latest improvements in the 4C System. In their turn, they are required to keep 4C coffee purchasing records and participate in commercial reporting to ensure traceability of the supply chains and enable comprehensive data collection and impact assessment.
IBs and FBs are welcome to participate in the 4C sustainability events to share their experience with the 4C certification system and exchange with the other international coffee experts.
Using the 4C Logo and Claims on-pack
Sourcing Requirements
Physical segregation is crucial for transparent communication. The 4C logo and 4C related claims can be applied as long as the following rules are followed, for each brand:
- Entry level requires that a minimum of 30% of 4C certified coffee is contained in the package
- Within maximum period of three years, the percentage of 4C certified coffee in the package must reach 90% at least
- In case the brand contains less than 90% of 4C certified coffee, the 4C logo must be used in combination with a corresponding disclaimer
